How to Make a Candle Burn Longer: 8 Candle Care Tips

A beautiful candle should do more than smell good for a few minutes. With a little care, you can help it burn evenly, reduce wasted wax, and enjoy its fragrance for longer. These tips work especially well for hand-poured coconut-soy candles, but most apply to any container candle.
1. Give the first burn enough time
The first burn sets the pattern for every burn that follows. Let the melted wax reach close to the edge of the container before extinguishing the candle. This helps prevent tunneling, where a narrow well forms around the wick and leaves unused wax along the sides.
2. Trim the wick before each burn
Before relighting, trim the cooled wick to about 1/4 inch. A properly trimmed wick usually produces a steadier flame, less soot, and a more controlled burn. Remove the clipped piece so it does not fall into the wax.
3. Keep each burn session reasonable
Avoid burning a candle for extremely long stretches. Follow the instructions on its safety label; for many container candles, a session of roughly three to four hours is a practical upper limit. Let the candle cool completely before lighting it again.
4. Protect the flame from drafts
Place your candle away from open windows, ceiling fans, air vents, and busy walkways. Moving air can make the flame flicker, cause uneven melting, and increase soot. A stable surface in a calm part of the room gives the candle its best chance to burn evenly.
5. Keep the wax pool clean
Dust, wick trimmings, and other debris can interfere with the burn. Once the candle is cool, gently remove anything that has fallen into the wax. Never reach into hot wax, and never add fragrance oil or other materials to a burning candle.
6. Center the wick after extinguishing
If the wick has shifted, wait until the flame is out and the wax is still soft, then carefully guide the wick back toward the center with a suitable tool. Do not touch hot wax or the container. A centered wick helps the candle melt more evenly during the next use.
7. Store candles carefully
When not in use, keep candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes. A lid can help keep dust off the wax. Good storage also helps preserve the appearance and fragrance of the candle.
8. Know when to stop burning
Do not burn a candle all the way to the bottom. Stop when the remaining wax reaches the minimum level stated on the safety label. The container can become too hot when very little wax remains.
A quick candle-care checklist
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting.
Allow a full melt pool on the first burn.
Keep the candle away from drafts.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep away from children, pets, and flammable objects.
Follow the candle’s safety label and discontinue use at the stated wax level.
